Read the following two papers on the subject of social networking:

  2. Back-to-School Blogging

Consider for discussion the following questions, plus any others that occur to you:

Romance in the Information Age

Questions:

  1. This article posits that new communication technologies may be making subtle changes on our very natures, particularly changing the way we "feel, act, and think". Do you agree or disagree? What evidence would you cite?
  2. In what ways do these technologies erode boundaries necessary for the growth of successful relationships?
  3. What do you think of the practice of "Googling" someone? Have you ever done it? Would you ever? What effect does this "transparency" have on trust? On privacy?
  4. What are some of the consequences of the "over-sharing" encouraged by these technologies? Pros? Cons?
  5. What's the positive side of this? In what ways do these technologies provide opportunities for positive growth of a relationship?
  6. Do you agree that the "stigma" of Internet dating has been lifted? Why or why not? How effective do you think science can be in effectively matching people?
  7. What effect have these technologies had on what characteristics we think we should be seeking in another person? Is this a positive change?
  8. What kinds of traditional practices are "left out" when we embrace new technologies? Do you agree with the author's thesis that while we now have many more options, we tend to ignore the older ones?

Back-to-School Blogging

Questions:

  1. Did you use any kind of social network prior to meet other Furman students prior to your coming to Furman? What were your experiences? What are some of the advantages of this type of interaction? Disadvantages?
  2. How do you feel about "lurking" representatives of the college or university? Can that be a positive thing? How might it negatively effect the interactions that take place?
  3. In what ways are social networking sites being used by students to interact after coming to campus? What are some of the possibilities?
