Computers in Society Assignment #5

Read the following two articles:
  1. Lying with Pixels
  2. Virtual Reality: Oxymoron or Pleonasm?

Consider for discussion the following questions, plus any others that occur to you:

Lying with Pixels

Questions:

  1. What move or television show not mentioned in the article has this technology been used in? Did you believe the images you saw in these movies and tv shows?
  2. Should this technology be restricted by government in the same way that encryption is currently so that it can’t be used for the wrong purposes?
  3. Would you be happier if the technology was used to place adds for products you used into your tv shows rather than products for items you have no interest in? Is this an invasion of privacy? Is this a form of actively persuasive technology?
  4. Is it morally right to have deceased actors starting in new roles? If so why do we need new actors (they cost so much money) if we can digitally use any already on film?
  5. Was it morally wrong for CBS to put their slogan all over NYC or was it simply good marketing?
  6. Has the “CNN Effect” ever effected you and how so? What other sectors does it affect besides defense?

Virtual Reality: Oxymoron or Pleonasm?

Questions:

  1. What are the basic requirements of virtual reality? Which is the most important requirement? Is true VR available now?
  2. What are some of the possible used of VR? Let your imagination go on this one. Are the things you thought of good or bad?
  3. Under what conditions would you trust an airline pilot who had never flown before?
  4. How does the sound you hear affect your perception of the image you see?
