Week 4 (June 2) Chapter 4

Under the Hood

Class Demo: Importing Data from the Internet

Homework:

1.      View information on managing Web queries.
Assignment: Visit www.microsoft.com, and use the Search feature to find information on how to manage Web queries. Read one article, and summarize your findings. Submit via Word document

2.      Complete one of the problems at the end of Importing Data from the Internet

3.      See if data imported from a Web site can be updated.
Assignment: Use Excel’s Web query feature by going to CNN’s Market Web site, money.cnn.com/data/markets. Select the table showing the Dow, NASDAQ, S&P, and so on, import it into Excel, and print the spreadsheet. Note the time indicated in cell B1. After waiting a few minutes, click the Refresh All button located in the Connections group on the Data toolbar. The time will change, and the values in Columns C, D, and E might change as well. Once again, print the spreadsheet, and compare the two printouts

Task: Learn to create your own database.

View the Sound Byte for Chapter 11 Creating an Access Database. This is located on Disc 1 of the Student CDs that came with your book. Open Sound Bytes (NOT Sound Byte Labs) and click on Chapter 11 and then Creating an Access Database. Follow the directions to create a CD Collection database described below

Assignment: Using the procedures outlined in the Sound Byte, create your own CD collection database using Microsoft Access. Perform the following steps:

1. Call your database “CD Collection <Your Name>.”
2. Define the following three tables and fields:

A.Recording Artists
RecordingArtistID (autonumber)
RecordingArtistName (text)
Birthdate (date)
B. Recordings
RecordingsID (autonumber)
RecordingArtistID (number)
MusicCategoryID (number)
