Quizzes: Every Monday in Lab except for the weeks of the exams

Lab Exam: Monday, Nov. 22 (regular lab time)

Final Project : Due Friday Dec. 3 at 4 pm

Task: Learn to create your own database

View the Sound Byte for Chapter 11 Creating an Access Database. This is located on Disc 1 of the Student CDs that came with your book. Open Sound Bytes (NOT Sound Byte Labs) and click on Chapter 11 and then Creating an Access Database.

 

Lab : Data Management with Microsoft Access

Preparation: Read the the handout for this lab activity;

In-lab: Complete the database design activity in the handout. Show it to me or the lab aid and receive the second half of the lab activity. Save the file you create as "lastnameDB".

Due: Oct. 18("lastnameDB" file in the IN folder on file server)

lab: Downloading data from the Web into Excel Choose one of the problems at the end of the tutorial and submit the solution to me via email. In addition print your spreadsheet and analysis to me via a Word doc.

 

Lab : Microsoft Access mini - project

Preparation: Read the notes for this lab;

In-lab: Work on the database design activity in the lab description. Save the file you create as "lastnameDBProject" on the desktop.

Before you leave the lab copy your database to a CD.

Assignment: Complete the database design activity in the lab description

Homework: Learn More About How File Compression Works

Task: Visit How Stuff Works to see how file compression works.
Assignment: Visit computer.howstuffworks.com/file-compression.htm to see how file compression works and answer the following questions.
1. File compression programs work because most types of computer files have the same information listed over and over again. What is this repetition called?
2. To shrink files, most compression programs use a variation of which algorithm?
3. What is the expected reduction for a good-sized text file?
4. What file types have very little compression and why?
5. How does lossy compression work?
6. What would lossy compression do to a blue sky?
7. Explain why a lossy compression would not be used with a text file.
